EU 2040 climate target - what does it mean for forests? - Seven elements of the Communication will

Recommendation: The EU should integrate the aims to restore and manage EU forests in a way that works for the climate, foresters, wildlife and local communities in its climate policy architecture. [...] In the third scenario used by the Communication’s Impact Assessment “the use of biomass and waste is … projected to increase by 30% … representing approximately 20% of the Gross Available Energy share in 2040.” This was the scenario adopted by the Commission, but it is based on a dangerous error - the assumption that the maximum amount of biomass that can be used for EU energy production without u. [...] The Communication recognises that tackling the food sector is crucial to meeting the EU’s 2040 climate target and that the food industry drives producers’ and consumers’ decisions. [...] While discussions about diets are controversial due to their link to cultural habits, the Communication can’t hide from the fact that the EU cannot meet its climate targets without addressing the meat-heavy diets that make up the bulk of GHG emissions in the agricultural sector. [...] In particular, the EU should have binding targets and plans to reduce the number, size and weight of private cars as well as clear targets and funding for more public transport and active travel.
