5 Mar 2024

The official UN SDG Indicator List and Sustainable Development Report SDG Indicator List were applied for the selection of indicators and for the assessment. [...] Based on data availability and relevance of indicators in relation to the state, three indicators were selected, namely the proportion of population below the international poverty line, the proportion of population living below the national poverty line (absolute poverty and relative poverty), and urban and rural relative poverty gap. [...] Based on the Household Income and Basic Amenities Survey by DOSM, the incidence of relative poverty in Penang increased from 11.3% in 2016 to 13.2% in 2019 and 15.3% in 2022. [...] Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities The population of Penang has increased dramatically from 1.17 million in 1993 to about 1.77 million in 2023 (an increase of about 51%) and is projected to rise further to 2.1 million in 2040.10 People are moving to cities in search of employment, better quality of life, or access to better public infrastructure and facilities. [...] The domestic violence as a proportion of population dropped from 0.013% in 2016 to 0.004% in 2018, and then increased to 0.027% in 2022.13 Despite the implementation of many strategies and plans in combatting this issue, domestic violence remains one of the most serious social problems in Malaysia.
