Nearly Half of Workers Are Women The share of women in the workforce and the share of workers who are women both increased substantially before the 1990s, in California and the nation (Reed 2004). [...] Immigrants make up 43 percent of workers in computer and mathematical jobs, and 37 percent of those in architecture and engineering; they are also 74 percent of workers in farming, fishing, forestry jobs, and about half or more of those in production, and building and grounds cleaning. [...] The next most common job categories in both California and the rest of the US are healthcare practitioners and technicians, education instruction and library, and business and financial operations. [...] And although the share of workers who are immigrants has held constant in recent years, the share of workers who are immigrants new to the US has declined and shifted toward workers from India and China.
