Airport Capacity and Competition

2 Apr 2024

Through a combination of increasing demand for air travel and limits on potential airport expansions, especially around populated urban areas, many airports now experience increasing capacity constraints. Slot allocation is a tool designed to manage these constraints. This report examines how current mechanisms for allocating slots at congested airports impact connectivity and competition, focusing on the outcomes of different slot allocation mechanisms for aviation users. The report also discusses whether it is possible to use airport co-ordination to improve the environmental performance of the aviation sector. This report draws on the deliberations of an ITF Roundtable, "Airport Capacity and Competition".
