Marta Pizano: A trailblazer's path from research to global policy

18 Mar 2024

In the field of environmental science and policy, Marta Pizano has played a pivotal role as a Co-chair of the Montreal Protocol's Technical and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP). She has been instrumental in offering unbiased, policy-relevant recommendations concerning the environmental effects of various ozone-depleting substances. Bridging Policy and Practice Over a career spanning more than two decades, Marta has dedicated herself to the meticulous evaluation of substances impacting the atmosphere, with a particular focus on the phase-out of methyl bromide, an ozone-depleting chemical used extensively in agriculture. Her unique approach involves direct engagement with farmers, bridging the gap between high-level environmental policies and practical, on-the-ground agricultural practices. In 2005, Marta joined the Technical and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP), a key body in providing technical and economic evaluations to the parties of the Montreal Protocol to support their decision-making processes regarding the protection of the ozone layer. Marta's invitation to participate was a recognition of her steadfast commitment to environmental conservation.
