The 2015 migration crisis in the EU revealed wide divergence in the level of reception conditions provided to asylum-seekers by Member States. In July 2016, the Commission put forward a proposal to replace the current Reception Conditions Directive, to ensure that asylum-seekers can benefit from harmonised and dignified reception standards throughout the EU. Parliament is due to vote its first-reading position on the text, provisionally agreed with the Council in December 2023, during its April I plenary session.
