In December 2021, the European Commission proposed to revise the Schengen Borders Code, with a view to strengthening the Schengen area. The revision introduces new rules to address challenges relating to irregular migration, security and public health emergencies. Following the provisional agreement reached by the co legislators in December 2023, Parliament will vote on the proposal during its April II part-session.
