The military goal of the Israeli right-wing government was to push the residents of Gaza out of the enclave. [...] The guiding principles published by the new coalition government explicitly assert the ‘exclusive and unquestionable right to all areas of the Land of Israel’ for the Jews.11 The Land of Israel or ‘Eretz Israel’ is a biblical term for all the land that, till the middle of the last century, was mostly populated by Palestinians. [...] The Palestinian public had become deeply resentful of the Oslo Accords and the seeming acquiescence of the PA to the creeping annexation of the Palestinian lands by the Zionist state. [...] The American and the Israeli governments had wanted the Fatah-dominated PA to take over the administration of Gaza, even though the Palestinian electorate had rejected the Fatah and its allies. [...] The entire world has been witness to the brutalities inflicted on the hapless people of Gaza and the rest of the occupied territories, thanks to the courageous reporting of journalists from ground zero in Gaza.
