[...] The disease occurs in three forms: the visceral form, kala-azar, which affects the spleen and liver; the cutaneous type that affects the skin leading to permanent scarring and disfigurement; and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, which produces lesions that spread to the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and pharynx causing severe disfigurement and suffering.
