The development objective of the Boosting Inclusive Growth for Zanzibar: Integrated Development Project for Tanzania is to improve living conditions and promote local economic development in targeted areas of Zanzibar. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) cash compensation for the land at replacement cost (according to the prevailing market prices of the land at the affected areas); (2) allowance for loss of profit per month (between 1 to 3 months by type of structure and nature of business, amounts to be quoted separately for each business category and computed in Tanzanian shillings); (3) reimbursement for unexpired tenancy and lease period or the amount of deposit or advance paid by the tenant to the landlord or the remaining amount at the time of expropriation; (4) three months’ notice to harvest standing crops shall be given. However, if notice cannot be given, compensation for these crops shall be paid at market value; (5) people will be provided with seedlings to replace the trimmed trees; (6) provision of alternative spaces for children to play and for market merchandise; and (7) an additional financial assistance of 20 percent of the compensation amount payable for vulnerable groups.
