[...] A brief background on the development and implementation of the Oil Sands Program was followed by a summary of the challenges in the design of a biomonitoring program in the area including; large rivers with largely sand substrate, co-occurring reference, habitat and industrial gradients within a longitudinal section of river/stream, and high year-to-year variability in discharge regimes.
