A study examined the effectiveness of the Reading Recovery Pilot program of the school district of the city of Saginaw, Michigan. Thirty-five of the original 55 students in the program were successfully discontinued from the program--they read with a 90% or greater level of accuracy materials being used in the classroom and use the kinds of strategies that good readers use. Two groups of randomly sampled first grade Compensatory Education students served as comparison students. Subjects were administered the Diagnostic Survey and subtests of the California Achievement Test. Results indicated that successfully discontinued Reading Recovery children outgained comparison children on five of the six subtests of the Diagnostic Survey and on all three reading subtests of the California Achievement Tests. Findings suggest that the Reading Recovery program should be continued and expanded and that the design for future research should include other instruments that may better chart students' progress over the years.
