Reproductive Rights in the US Wildfire Crisis: Insights From Health Workers in Oregon State

This report explores the intersection of climate change, specifically wildfires, and reproductive health rights. Produced by Human Rights Watch in collaboration with Nurturely, the report is based on over 50 interviews with health workers, including doulas, midwives, doctors, and public health officials in Oregon, a state significantly impacted by wildfires. The report highlights how wildfires exacerbate existing reproductive health challenges, especially among marginalized communities, such as low-income individuals, immigrants, and people of color. It documents the mental and physical health impacts of wildfire exposure on pregnant people, including increased risks of preterm births, low birth weight, and other adverse outcomes. The report also critiques the insufficient response from government agencies and health systems in addressing the unique vulnerabilities of pregnant people during wildfire events. Recommendations include improved public health communication, access to resources like air purifiers, and the inclusion of reproductive justice in climate and environmental health policies.
