Speech therapy assessment of pragmatic, discursive and narrative skills for patients with schizophrenic spectrum disorders and other psychotic disorders: evaluation of the effectiveness of a new test

9 Jun 2023

Language disorders in schizophrenia and their impact on patient’s quality of life have been documented in the literature. These disorders mainly concern pragmatic and discursive abilities. However, nowadays, there is no standardized language assessment test specific to schizophrenic patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new assessment test for pragmatic, discursive and narrative abilities adapted to patients suffering from schizophrenia, based on pre-existing but inadequate gold standards. Thus, we evaluated the number of patients detected in the pathological zone on the new test and on the gold-standard scales. Our results showed that the newly developed test allows a detailed analysis and objectification of the patients' language disorders, unlike the gold standard. Moreover, the personal and language singularities found for each patient confirm the interest of having a new precise and personalized evaluation test for this population. Establishing norms for this test would allow speech- language pathologists to use it in clinical practice. In a multidisciplinary care setting, proposing remediation of communication and language skills would improve social and professional reintegration as well as the quality of life of patients. In research, it would be interesting to analyze the similarities and differences in clinical language signs in developmental language disorder and in premorbid schizophrenia. This data would allow to improve early diagnosis and care of patients at risk of developing a schizophrenic spectrum disorder.
