The future of an uncertain feudalism? Ruptures, scientific paradigms and theoretical issues

29 May 2023

Based on analyses at different scales, combining traditional and digital methods, the article proposes to explore the position of Alain Guerreau - author of numerous works on medieval Europe and the historical method - within medieval studies and the ‘feudalist’ paradigm in particular. It seeks first of all to better identify the originality of the author, before exploring the nature of the concepts he proposes. Our hypothesis is that this ensemble constitutes a new historical paradigm, largely different from previous approaches, including those related to historical feudalism. The last part of the essay is devoted to the study of the mechanisms of resistance linked to the emergence of these proposals, based on different theories from history and philosophy of science. In order to build and support its demonstration, the article proposes in parallel the examination of different historiographic corpora, taken from different national and international journals, lemmatized and explored with the help of tools from text mining and stylometry.
