Climate Change Technical Note : Bangladesh Bay Terminal Marine Infrastructure Development Project (English)

9 Sep 2024

The Project's largest investment is in the breakwater. The breakwater (sub-component 1a) is planned on an existing sandbar, which already in itself provides protection for the proposed port operations but may not be adequately resilient to ensure continuity of port operations due to the climate exacerbated hazards such as storm surge, cyclones, and sea-level rise. The existing sand bar will be the base case for assessing continuity of port operations given its existing level of protection for port operations. As a result, adaptive measures are presented to ensure continuity of port operations against climate exacerbated risks. It is presented to stabilize the existing sandbar through concrete piling (1 meter diameter piles spaced 3 meters apart across the sand bar) and vertical drains and build a rubble-mound breakwater with armor layer protection on top of the sand bar. Concrete mattresses are also presented to prevent scour around the base of the breakwater as erosion will be exacerbated by fluvial discharge into the Bay of Bengal.
