bases in the region since the end of the second world war, but this report is principally concerned with those located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait. [...] After the fall of the Shah and the Iranian revolution in 1979, the bases were still considered key elements of a defense of the region against the Soviets, although Iranian support was factored out.
