The overall homicide rate in Illinois increased from a rate of 8.0 per 100,000 in 2018 to 10.9 per 100,000 in 2022, and the firearm homicide rate increased from 6.4 per 100,000 in 2018 to 9.2 per 100,000 in 2022 (Figure 3). [...] In comparison, the national homicide rate has increased from 5.9 per 100,000 in 2018 to 7.7 per 100,000 in 2022, and the firearm homicide rate has increased from 4.4 per 100,000 in 2018 to 6.2 per 100,000 in 2022. [...] In comparison, the national suicide rate has also remained relatively stable with a rate of 14.2 per 100,000 in both 2018 and 2022, while the national firearm suicide rate has increased from 7.0 per 100,000 in 2018 to 7.6 per 100,000 in 2022.
