The effects of high-quality professional development on teachers and students: a cost-benefit analysis

18 May 2021

Some of the differences in average pay across regions are explained by the type of jobs in the region, while others are explained by differences in the characteristics of the region: the cost of living and the attractiveness to potential residents. [...] The pay figures in this chart are not adjusted for the composition of the workforce, so the differences across regions may be due to differences in the age or qualifications of the population and will be greater than the percentage difference in the left panel. [...] The chart plots the three measures against the previously constructed adjusted pay gap, where each bubble is a TTWA and the size of the bubble is proportionate to the number of teachers in the TTWA. [...] We focus here on the measurable characteristics of the region that may affect a teacher’s decision to apply for a job in that region: the cost of living, the level of deprivation and the characteristics of the schools. [...] The two exhibit a similar relationship, which can be seen from the similarity in the slope of the regression lines in each of the charts in the first two columns.
