We know that LGBT-identified people live in every state (with percentages ranging from 8.6 percent of the population of the District of Columbia and 5.3 percent of Vermont on the highest ends, and 2.0 percent of the South Dakota population on the lowest (Gates, 2017). [...] The combined impact of increased economic insecurity and the cost of Alzheimer’s care may make people less likely to recognize the symptoms, less able to provide in-home care and avoid institutionalization, and generally increase the precarious state of the situation facing LGBT people living with Alzheimer’s or caring for someone the disease.
