Orkney and Shetland Salmon Lice Modelling

16 Aug 2024

For the extent of the southward copepodid distribution from the Orkney farms it is observed that the lice are channelled southwards from the Pentland Firth to occupy a large portion of the North Sea towards the Moray Firth. [...] The risk of infestation by salmon lice varies according to the density of lice to which the fish are exposed and the duration of that exposure [Johnsen_2020], [ScotGov_2024], [SEPA_2024]. [...] The level of agreement between the models is likely due to particles being restricted to the upper 10 m of the water column and salinity avoidance being less critical in the well-mixed open seas around the Northern Isles compared with stratified fjordic systems such as those found on the West Coast of Scotland. [...] In terms of lice distribution, it is evident that the lice are channelled southwards from the Pentland Firth to occupy a large portion of the North Sea towards the Moray Firth.
