It involves making the best use of the functions of ecosystems and ecological processes to (i) design a productive agriculture that is less harmful to the environment and human health, (ii) avoid the over exploitation of natural resources, and (iii) reduce the implementation of agricultural practices based on the intensive use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and water.
