“History Education in the Digital Age” GENERAL REPORT Second annual Forum for History Education (2024)

14 Mar 2024

Since 1954, the Council of Europe has focused on history education, guided by Article 2 of the Cultural Convention, which encourages the study of languages and histories among member states. The Education Department has organized several Forums on contemporary historical issues. The first Forum, held in Belgrade in November 2022, addressed "Sites of Memories: Learning Spaces for Democracy," while the second Forum, reported here, took place in Brussels in March 2023 and focused on "History Education in the Digital Age." A third Forum is planned for May 2024 in Bologna, addressing challenges in higher education. The theme of history education in the digital age involves challenges related to research and teaching, such as managing digitized archives and using historical video games effectively. This publication aims to clarify these challenges amidst concerns about the distortion of history, contributing to the broader debate.
