Excessive online gaming and gambling can lead to significant risks, including addiction, social isolation, financial debt, and psychological distress. In response to these public health concerns, various policies and interventions have been implemented.
The Pompidou Group has established the Expert Group on Online Addictions as part of its 2023-2025 work program to address these challenges. Their 2024 report, “Risks and harms associated with online gaming and gambling,” focuses on these activities as recognized mental disorders by the World Health Organization. The report also discusses related issues like excessive internet use, cyberbullying, toxic online behavior, cybersecurity, and the convergence of gaming and gambling.
