Support and funding received for policy impact work Academics viewed internal support for policy engagement at Queen Mary as relatively limited, especially for early career researchers. [...] “There's a lot of people who want to do engagement work, but it's expensive to do properly and ethically, and it takes a lot of time.” Managing External Constraints Changes in government: Frequent changes in the government over the last several years, as well as the disconnect between departments, makes it difficult to sustain policy engagement efforts. [...] Academics often have to negotiate tensions between theoretical rigour and practical relevance; and forward-looking academia and the contemporary focus of policy work. [...] “...if you want the researchers to be able to have an impact on policy in government, then there needs to be investment from the university.” Time Increased time allocation and flexibility would facilitate the development of meaningful policy work. [...] Considering the perspectives and recommendations of Queen Mary academics will enhance the university's ability to bridge the gap between policy engagement and academic work, creating a supportive environment for conducting meaningful impact work.
