Cairo: For two nations - India and Canada - that have been long-standing partners and don't seem to have strategic divergence, these are unprecedented times. Claims and counterclaims, accusations and rebuttals, expulsions and counter-expulsions have become the norm. The latest comes in the form of Ottawa's charges against India's diplomats over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, and India expelling six Canadian diplomats in return. The foundation of a relationship laid painstakingly over the past seven decades has come unstuck, reminding us how sagacious political leadership is critical in nurturing diplomatic ties. Canada, under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, has managed to achieve the unthinkable - making Canada the 'new Pakistan' in the Indian foreign-policy matrix.
