A stronomers a nd t heir institutions should develop opportunities f or s tudents and postdoctoral researchers t o acquire a b road s et of s kills r elevant t o careers both in a nd beyond astronomy, should d evelop a c oordinated, e xpanded a nd enhanced a pproach t o student training, a nd s hould supplement t raining programs t hrough industrial p artnerships. [...] In 1967, s cientists f rom N RC, Q ueen’s U niversity a nd the University o f Toronto s ynchronized signals from t he Dominion R adio Astrophysical O bservatory i n British C olumbia a nd t he Algonquin Radio O bservatory i n Ontario to create a v irtual t elescope w ith t he resolving power o f a t elescope nearly a s l arge a s Canada. [...] Canadian t heoretical a strophysics has a l ong and successful h istory, highlighted by t he establishment in 1 984 o f the Canadian Institute f or T heoretical Astrophysics (CITA) a t t he University of T oronto a nd i ts a ccompanying national program in t heory, t hrough a peer-reviewed process o verseen by the Natural Sciences a nd Engineering R esearch C ouncil ( NSERC). [...] For ground-based astronomy, t he L RP2020 r eport o n astronomy funding compares c umulative a stronomy f unding from NSERC a nd C FI t o the cumulative a stronomy spending b y t he A ustralian R esearch C ouncil, a nd c oncludes t hat, o ver t he p eriod 2002-2018, the t otals f or n on-major projects are similar at a pproximately $ 250M. [...] The structure of a stronomy graduate programs d iffers by i nstitution: a t some u niversities, t he M Sc and P hD a re e ntirely separate, at others s tudents b egin a s M Sc s tudents a nd t ransition i nto a PhD, w hile a t o thers students e nter t he P hD d irectly f rom a n undergraduate d egree.
