Personal planning for future long-term care among mid-age and old adults in England: The role of expectations

31 Oct 2024

• Expectations of future LTC and knowledge of the funding system are independently associated with financial planning activities, reflecting that low expectations of LTC and lack of knowledge of the system may result in inadequate financial planning. [...] Athina Vlachantoni is a Professor of Gerontology and Social Policy at the University of Southampton where she is also Deputy Editor of Ageing & Society, and a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Social Policy. [...] Logistic regression models were employed to estimate the odds of planning for financing LTC, first adjusting for the source of funding and the respondents’ expectations of needing care variables only, and then adjusting for the full list of covariates (Table 2). [...] The findings highlight the significance of addressing the intricate factors that influence financial planning for LTC, and the need for tailored policies and programmes which consider individual differences and social and cultural factors. [...] The results suggest that efforts to promote financial planning for LTC should prioritize increasing awareness and knowledge of the risks and costs associated with LTC and the advantages of planning ahead.
