The report builds on public information and national data from the 27 Member States + UK and Norway1 for bio-waste generation, adopting a few assumptions on how to calculate the current capture of bio-waste in the EU27+ and the theoretical potential. [...] The update aims at assessing, whether there was an increase in captures, the likely influence of the obligation on separate management of bio-waste stipulated by Article 22 of the Waste Framework Directive, and the remaining “distance to target”, i.e. [...] 2.2.1 Estimated total generation of Bio-waste (theoretical potential) The calculation of the theoretical potential was based on a set of public reports and national data, defining bio-waste as the sum of food waste and garden waste, with the following assumptions: The reference data is a study6 published in 2014 showing the generation of municipal food waste (households + food service). [...] Results These assumptions and calculations led to the final estimation of total theoretical potential generation of food waste in the EU27+, and finally, a comparison to current capture, as shown in the Tables 8-10 and Figure 2.
