The first idea is that beliefs about the fairness of the economic system and of the deservedness of the recipients of the welfare state benefits matter for preferences for redistribution (Alesina and Giuliano, 2011). [...] The next three rows deal with expectations about the financial situation of the household in the next year, the likelihood of keeping the current occupation, and the likelihood of finding a new one in case one loses the current, respectively. [...] The difference in preferred tax rates on the top 1 percent and the bottom 50 percent of the income distribution is the dependent variable that measures the preferred progressivity of the underlying tax scheme.
