[...] In Chechnya, which until recently was the centre of Caucasian jihad, guerrilla warfare brings to mind the activity of the abreks, the legendary solitary warriors, who were hiding in the mountains long after the capitulation of Imam Shamil and the end of the 19th-century Caucasian War.
