The objective of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project is to increase access to improved sanitation and improved water supply in the GAMA, with emphasis on low-income communities and to strengthen management of environmental sanitation in the GAMA. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: provide personnel nose masks, hand sanitizers, clean water, liquid soap, sanitizers; ensure the personnel and teachers and students do not come too close on the site; as much as possible, ensure the construction workers refrain from close contact and touching of one another while on the field; construct gutters around the toilet blocks to carry excess run-off away from the facility into existing drains; where there are no existing drains, runoff should be channeled from the gutters into the natural vegetation where the adjoining spaces are not developed; where there is no natural vegetation beyond the toilet block, a buffer zone of green grass should be introduced to absorb run-off; provide education on the Health and Safety Management Plan for the workers; engage only experienced artisans for the construction works; ensure not to store construction materials and wastes on access ways on the school compound i.e. stone chippings, sand, roofing sheets, wood etc.; provide education to teachers, students on use of toilet facilities and transmission of COVID-19 disease; ensure there is flow of water in the hand washing basins; and provide liquid soap at the hand washing basin and hand cleaning tissue for use after using the toilet and also after cleaning the toilets
