BRIEFING - Work visas and migrant workers in the UK www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk

1 Sep 2022

The health and social work sector was the biggest contributor to growth in the number of non-EU Skilled Workers over the past decade; in 2021, 47% of Skilled Worker route visa grants were in the Health and Care subcategory. [...] While the skill profile of non-EU born workers in London is broadly similar to the rest of the UK, EU-born workers were significantly more likely to be in high-skilled work if they lived in London (37%) compared to the rest of the UK (27%). [...] Possible explanations for this decline include the fall in the value of the pound, reducing the value of money earned in the UK compared to other EU countries; political uncertainty due to Brexit; and the fact that EU migration had been unusually high in the pre-referendum period and thus might be expected to have fallen anyway. [...] In most cases, the declines in work visas issued in 2020 were driven primarily by very low levels in the second quarter of the year, during the period of the first lockdown. [...] The use of the ONS statistical data in this work does not imply the endorsement of the ONS in relation to the interpretation or analysis of the statistical data.
