Under the Radar - Towards More Integrated Child Protection Responses for

9 Nov 2022

A more accurate portrayal can be made using the data collected by the 116000 hotlines and the research derived from the RADAR project, which shows that: • In 2021, 75,66% of children reported as having “run away” to the hotlines escaped home, 21,11% were reported missing from a care institution, and 2,35% from a foster family.1 Children in alternative care are overrepresented in this group. [...] For example, girls who run away are known to be at higher risk of sexual exploitation and LGBTQI+ children experience a higher prevalence of homelessness when away from home.3 > The RADAR project (Running Away: Drivers, Awareness, and Responses) RADAR is the first European project to try and achieve genuine progress in the understanding of running away and the experiences of children before and af. [...] The project is supported by a board of Professional Experts, and a board of young people with experience of (being at risk of) going missing In the first phase of the project, extensive research on the link between running away and ACEs was completed, reaching a total of 28 children, 22 frontline professionals, and 34 child hotlines and helplines across 15 European countries. [...] > Towards a better understanding and improved protection: the conference objectives and participants Building on the outcomes of the RADAR research, the aim of the conference is to demonstrate the link between running away and childhood adversity and reflect on how running away is a cross-cutting child protection issue.
