MDE 12/045/2011 Launch of Amnesty International report on Egypt slums Cairo 23 August What: On 23 August 2011, Amnesty International will hold a press in Cairo to launch a new report on conditions in slums, ‘We are not dirt’: Forced evictions in Egypt’s informal settlements. [...] The 123-page report, released ahead of the country’s first elections since the fall of former President Mubarak, documents cases of forced evictions affecting hundreds of families in the country’s vast slums. [...] The vast majority of the victims killed or injured during the 'January 25 revolution' came from underprivileged backgrounds. [...] The report argues that the toppling of President Hosni Mubarak and the other dramatic political changes that have happened in Egypt, give the new Egyptian authorities an historic opportunity to address one of the key demands of protesters – to ensure that the needs of millions of slum residents are prioritised. [...] When: The press conference will be held at 13:00hrs EET time on 23 August and last approximately one hour.
