However, in just six weeks, and despite the official closure of the Chad- Sudan border since the beginning of the conflict, nearly 150,000 refugees and Chadian returnees have already sought safety in the eastern Chadian provinces of Ouaddaï, Sila and Wadi Fira. [...] With thousands of arrivals gathered in locations close to the border, which are exposed to violence and prone to flooding, there is an urgent priority to offer voluntary relocation to at least 50 per cent of those staying in spontaneous sites. [...] Given that the current situation has far exceeded initial projections, the financial requirements have been revised upwards by to $226 million, to reflect the significantly larger scale of the crisis. [...] WFP has noted a significant increase in the cost of basic food and fuel in the eastern region, where the price of staple foods has more than doubled since the start of the conflict in Sudan. [...] However, of the $670 million needed to assist these populations, only 12 per cent of the funding has been received to date despites the increasing acute needs.
