Key messages by Sudan’s Humanitarian Country Team and the Refugee Regional Response Team

18 Jun 2023

More than 2.1 million people have now fled their homes in search of safety, including nearly 1.7 million internally displaced1 and nearly 500,000 refugees and returnees who have crossed the borders to neighbouring countries, mostly to Egypt, Chad and South Sudan.2 UN agencies and partners call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, restore calm and to begin a dialogue to resolve the crisis. [...] The extent and level of new contamination throughout Sudan is currently unknown; however, explosive remnants of war are considered extremely dangerous and inhibit the provision of protective services to the population and endanger lives. [...] ● Hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure essential for the supply of water and electricity must be protected and life-saving medical supplies to treat the sick and wounded must be allowed to reach hospitals and health care centres. [...] The parties must adhere to International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, including the protection of all civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the unhindered access of humanitarian personnel and supplies. [...] However, the arrival of humanitarian supplies from outside of the Darfur region into the Darfur states, which is critical ahead of the upcoming rainy season, is still hampered by the ongoing violence and insecurity.
