This analysis aims to provide directional insight on what some of the critical policies to consider are, the considerations to make them as ambitious as the can be and to show an unconstrained “size of the prize” in terms of reducing plastic consumption, and mismanagement of plastic waste, and mitigating GHG emissions. [...] The reduction in plastic demand is achieved by 1) changing the design of electronics by 2050 through modular design for disassembly to facilitate reuse and extend product life; and 2) the substitution of plastics with other materials: metals, wood, and ceramics could replace the use of PP and PE for structural uses and casings and the use of PUR and PS for insulation (ODI, 2020). [...] Note: The reduction level (Arrow 0.1 in system map) represents the reduction in plastic consumption in 2040 in the Global Rules Scenario relative to the consumption in 2040 in the Business as Usual Scenario. [...] The Global Rules Scenario reuse targets apply to the following single use plastic applications: • Beverages (sodas, water, alcoholic): 25% of the volume of sales to be via reuse models in High Income regions, and 15% in the rest of the world. [...] This is achieved by first changing the design of electronics by 2050 through modular design for disassembly to facilitate reuse and extend product life; and second, the substitution of plastics with other materials: metals, wood, and ceramics could replace the use of PP and PE for structural uses and casings and the use of PUR and PS for insulation (ODI, 2020).
