Political dynamics shape Tanzania’s energy transition potential

28 Sep 2023

Despite ambitions to diversify energy supplies, Tanzania has mainly developed domestic gas and hydropower on a large scale Many lower-income African countries have set targets for developing solar and wind as part of their energy mix. The development of such non-hydro renewable-energy sources has been supported by development assistance, particularly from Western donors, to combat climate change. However, implementation on a larger scale has often lagged behind. This new DIIS Working Paper aims at developing a better understanding of the difference between targets and implementation using mainland Tanzania as a case.
