27 Sep 2023

The tagging and the picturing of the bodies took place on the naval vessels. [...] Members of the AM Unit interviewed the survivors when they came ashore in the city of Kalamata: The survivors where in shock. [...] PM Data Collection: It’s critical to proceed with fingerprinting of the recovered bodies immediately when they come ashore and not to wait for the autopsy, due the saponification of the fingers as a result of the bodies remaining in the water for a long period of time. [...] AM Data collection: The Hellenic DVI Team was based at the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum facilities, where we received the relatives of the victims who live in Greece for the interview and the collection of biological material (DNA). [...] The collaboration with the Interpol and the ICRC (International Committee of Red Cross) is paramount regarding the facilitation of DNA sampling and analysis procedure in such cases.
