The Contribution of Indigenous People to Future Labour Force Growth in Canada:

30 Oct 2023

In many provinces and regions, the proportion is much higher: 17 and 27 per cent in Manitoba and Saskatchewan; 22 per cent in Quebec; 20 per cent in the Atlantic; and in the North, Indigenous people will account for all of the labour force growth, more than offsetting the decline in the non-Indigenous labour force. [...] The third section presents the labour force projections and the projected contributions of Indigenous people to labour force growth for Canada, and for the Provinces and Territories of the country. [...] The ratio of the change in the Indigenous labour force to the change in the total labour force is our measure of the Indigenous population’s contribution to Canada’s labour force growth over the 2021–2041 period. [...] The result of this faster growth in the Indigenous population of working age is an increase in the share of Indigenous people in the overall workforce from 4.9 per cent in 2021 to 5.8 per cent in 2041 in the Medium-growth Scenario. [...] The underlying explanation for the lower Indigenous share of labour force growth in this study is the differences in the evolution of the working-age population in the two studies.
