Turkey is Israel's oldest friend in the Middle East -- and for a good part of their 74-year relationship, has been its closest one in the neighborhood. Despite occasional spats over the years, Turkey and Israel, both non-Arab states, have been fascinated with one another and found ample strategic rationale to keep their relationship alive. Yet since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 and the breakout of the deadly war in Gaza, no regional country has been as harsh in its criticism of Israel as Turkey.
