Bottom Line
- Though it wasn’t called such until 1946, the US-UK “Special Relationship” has really existed since after the War of 1812.
- The United States benefits from the relationship by being able to tap into UK historical relationships across the globe, have the UK run point on dealing with some of America’s European allies, and have access to intelligence in areas where American coverage is scant. The United Kingdom benefits from defense industrial cooperation with the United States, access to US technical intelligence, and US security guarantees. In addition, UK diplomats in Washington have higher level access to policymakers than any other country.
- British-American relations, however, do need a reset, to take more fully into account the different governing systems of the two countries, and to establish more equitability.
