They are Women in the Plural Gender, Inequality and Poverty in Cabo Verde : A Background Note for the Poverty Assessment (English)

This report is a background note to the poverty assessment for Cabo Verde. This report presents an overview of gender inequalities, status, trends, and drivers behind the observed outcomes. The quantitative data are complemented with qualitative data collected through key informant interviews held with different stakeholders in the country - representatives of civil society, academia, government, and the development community. Overall, the analysis shows that Cabo Verde has made significant gains in terms of gender equality over the past few decades. Illiteracy has been almost eliminated, access to prenatal care is basically universal, and maternal mortality is significantly below the regional average. Key informants and local experts explained Cabo Verde's positive standing today in gender equality with respect to other countries in the region as the result of multiple factors. According to key informants, prioritizing the autonomy of women's bodies entailed efforts to enable women to take control of their body, have access to sexual and reproductive health services, and live a life free from violence.
