Three plants are involved in the production of the raw materials for polycarbonate; the chlorine plant, the phosgene plant and the bisphenol A (BPA) plant. [...] The membrane is permeable for positive ions, resulting in the movement of the Na+ ions from the anode to the cathode side, where extra caustic soda is formed. [...] As the purity of the BPA influences the colour of the polycarbonate, it is important that the BPA is of high purity. [...] Water is removed and part of the dewatered mother liquor containing phenol and some by-products (isomers) is recycled back into the formulation step to be reused in the reactor where the isomers revert to the desired BPA. [...] 1 SABIC IP BoZ is located in what is called the ‘Rijn-Maas-Scheldedelta’, which is a river delta in the Netherlands and Belgium that is formed by the confluence of the Rhine, the Meuse and the Scheldt.
