Introduction The Maghreb, [a] commonly referred to as North Africa, is considered part of the Arab world. Yet, the Maghreb has a distinct culture, political landscape, and development trajectory. Historically, these countries have been closely linked to former colonial powers—Spain, Italy, and France—which have influenced their foreign and economic policies. [1] The region occupies a unique geo-strategic position, with Europe’s powerful economies to the north and the resource-rich Sub-Saharan Africa to the south.
